Expressive Realism means, reality as expressed by the author. As it is an expressed reality, so there can be various versions for it...As Virginia Woolf puts it in her novel "To the Lighthouse", "nothing was simply one thing".
On a general note, or in my words, Realism is basically a movement in literature, arts and architecture in which the creator depicts reality as it is without his own interpretation. His version of depiction may very well be his own, but the idea and the mindset of the artist is to portray the thing or object the way it is without a brush stroke of his own judgement. In other words the artist is copying the created object.
